Signs Your Oriental or Persian Rug Needs Professional Cleaning
These are the moments when most Tampa Bay homeowners reach out about their high-value rugs.
-
Years of foot traffic and dust embed into wool and silk fibers. Hand-washing brings the original color saturation back without damaging the dyes.
-
Wool absorbs liquids deep into the foundation. Surface treatment doesn't reach the contamination underneath. Full immersion soak with enzyme treatment is the only thing that actually works on wool rugs.
-
Some antique rugs have unstable dyes from natural plant or mineral sources. Hot water and harsh chemicals make this worse. We test every rug for dye stability before cleaning.
-
Moth holes, fringe wear, and edge fraying are common on rugs over 20 years old. We can clean around damage and offer repair recommendations.
-
Wool rugs that have gotten wet need professional drying immediately. Without it, they shrink, lose shape, and grow mildew that's very hard to remove later.
-
Tampa Bay families often have their Oriental rugs cleaned before holidays, gatherings, or selling a home. We schedule around your calendar.
Why Oriental and Persian Rugs Need Specialty Cleaning
Generic carpet cleaning is the wrong approach for hand-knotted rugs. Here's why these rugs need a different process.
Hand-knotted construction is fragile: Persian, oriental, and antique rugs are made from individual knots tied by hand. Aggressive rotary brushes used for synthetic carpets can loosen knots, fray edges, and break wool fibers. We never use rotary equipment on these rugs.
Natural fibers respond differently to water and chemicals: Wool, silk, and cotton react to pH, temperature, and pressure in ways synthetic fibers don't. We test each rug for fiber type and dye stability before cleaning, then adjust the process for what your specific rug needs.
Dyes in older rugs are often unstable: Antique rugs and many Persian rugs use natural plant or mineral dyes that can run, fade, or bleed when exposed to the wrong cleaner. We pre-test every rug in a hidden corner before applying any solution to the full piece.
The foundation matters: A hand-knotted rug has a foundation of cotton or wool warp and weft threads that hold the knots together. Aggressive cleaning damages this foundation, which is irreversible. Our hand-wash process protects it.
Most Oriental and Persian rugs are valuable: These rugs often cost thousands of dollars and increase in value over time when maintained properly. Damage from improper cleaning is a real financial loss. We treat every rug like it's an heirloom because for most of our customers, it is.
Our Hand-Wash Process for Oriental and Persian Rugs
Common Issues We Treat
Pet odor and stains: The most common request. Cat and dog urine soaks into wool foundations and stays there until properly treated. We use UV inspection to identify all contaminated areas, then full immersion soak with enzyme treatment.
Color bleeding and dye migration: Older Persian rugs with natural dyes sometimes have unstable colors. We pre-test before cleaning and adjust the process. If colors have already migrated from past cleaning attempts, we can sometimes reverse the damage with controlled treatment.
Beverage and food stains: Wine, coffee, juice, and food spills set quickly on wool. The sooner we get to it the better, but we can usually remove stains even months later with the right approach.
Moth damage: Common on rugs stored in attics or unused rooms. We can clean around the damage and recommend repair specialists for severe cases.
Fringe repair and edge work: Many older rugs have damaged fringes from wear. We can clean the rug and recommend a repair specialist if the fringe needs restoration.
Smoke and odor removal: House fire residue or heavy cigarette smoke embeds into wool fibers. We use specialized deodorization treatment that's safe for natural fibers.

Oriental and Persian Rug Cleaning Questions
-
Steam cleaning uses high heat, pressure, and chemicals designed for synthetic carpet. Wool and silk react badly to these conditions, and hand-knotted construction can be damaged by the equipment. Hand-wash is the only safe method for these rugs.
-
Every rug is pre-tested in a hidden area before cleaning. If dyes are unstable, we adjust the process. For severe cases we may use a color-stabilizing treatment before cleaning.
-
Yes, with full immersion soak and enzyme treatment. Surface cleaning doesn't reach the urine in the foundation. The difference is dramatic when the right process is used.
-
Most rugs are back to your home within 5 to 10 business days. Larger or more delicate rugs may take longer. We let you know when we pick it up.
-
Yes. Fringes are inspected and cleaned with extra care. If a fringe is already damaged, we can recommend a repair specialist.
-
Yes. Silk requires extra care and we adjust the cleaning method accordingly. Silk costs are usually higher than wool because of the specialized treatment.
-
Yes. Older rugs need a more careful approach, and we adjust accordingly. We won't clean a rug if we think the dyes or fibers won't survive the process. Honest assessment first.
